Hands on letter and sound recognition.
Create a sensory box or bag take magnetic letters paper cut out letters or foam shapes placing them into the sensory box. And let them dig around until they find all the lettersDuring the summer this can be done with water balloons on the hopscotch board. You can feel the balloon with water and place the blending sound on one side while on the hopscotch board you placed the other parts of each word. When the end of the word is landed on and your child has the beginning blending sound he or she can say the word and it's entirety sounding it out completely and he or she can then smash the water balloon to the ground.
A scavenger hunt can also be done. The first round the child has to find all blending sounds that you're working on that week. The second round they have to find the endings of each word. If they find all the words they get a prize of you're choosing.
When the full word is found. Let your child tape them together and say them. Then write them and put them in a sentence.
Let your little one go fishing for the letters that you were teaching this week. As they find the letters. Place each letter in front of them along with some Play-Doh. Have them roll the Play-Doh out into a big rectangle shape . Then allow them to take Play-Doh and Trace their letters in the Play-Doh finger
Also take newspaper and spread all across the table until it is thoroughly covered there it again with an extra layer of newspaper. Then get a baking pan top the metal one and spray it well with shaving cream until it coats the entire thing or enough of it and trace the letters into the shaving cream with their fingers. Same can be done with numbers
Try making letters out of pipe cleaners, paper squares, beans, heavy thread or even feathers
Materials needed one of the materials above or even several could be done if you're really the creative type. Let your children choose which one they would like to use.
White or construction paper.
If you wanted to make that activity more creative. Using paper lunch bags as your background instead of instead of white paper is doable.
Have them make a book was anywhere from 26 to 49 sheets of white paper. Looking decorate the book how they want to. However in this book they will be writing their letters they are working on each day.
Begin by placing flashcards of the alphabet you guys have been working on this week. Instruct them to open the book to a clean page. And allow them to try to copy the letter/s meaning uppercase and lowercase
If they needed guide them to the process of holding the pencil and drawing the letters until they get the hang of it.
Can also have your child do handwriting worksheets by googling dotted alphabet or alphabets with dotted lines
Numbers, Counting
Sing counting songs with movement
10 little indians, the ants go marching and this old man, no more monkeys jumping on the bed. Sesame Street song 1 through 10 audios or videos can also be used.
Do paper crafts each day making bubble number cutouts pasting them onto one side of the paper and drawing something equivalent to that number example ladybugs. They would draw and cut out the number two, paste it on the paper on one side and then on the other drawer two ladybugs.
They can also have a sensory bag with play ladybugs in it. Ask Mom to write the number you guys have been working on. On construction or white paper. Place the white paper with the number on it underneath the plastic bag with the ladybugs in it and then trace the number using the ladybugs while they're inside the bag.
If you want something with traditional you can get handouts that your kids have to trace with numbers on it. You can print them online or hand make them yourself or you can let them try to make their own dotted worksheet. Mommy staying nearby because they may need some help.
Number may be found by googling preschool and kindergarten worksheets numbers
Google number worksheets
Before they trace get some little cars or some little buttons and let them trace the number with one of those items
When they finish and let them trace it with a pencil, pen marker or even paint to daring LOL.
Bonus take a piece of construction paper that your child write the number that you're working on, on the paper. Then let them Trace the number outline with glue. After that's done give them some macaroni or some beans and let them trace the number again with the macaroni and the beans.
If the picture has been done correctly they should now have a number example two made with macaroni or beans.
Math Basics again the hopscott boy can be used if you're doing 6 + 3.
Put six in one square and plus in the other square three in the next and the equal sign and let your child write the answer in the next square.
This can be done for several kinds math problems. Play the game as you would play regular hopscotch just calling out the math problem
Take a piece of construction paper make one square plus another equals something put the answer and use nice to find out what plus what equals the answer that was already given the same method can be used for subtraction
A basic hanger can be used as well take a piece of paper cut it into a little square big enough to cover the mid part of the hanger write a plus or minus sign on it. Let's say you're doing 5 + 3 you put five clothes pins or scarves on one side and three on the other count them and problem solved.
Create an addition or subtraction Tower
Math with
Personal car lanes for each person who comes
Example there are already two car lanes because two people came.Suddenly five more people show up how many more Lanes have to be added. Five more have to be added So 2 + 5 = how many cars were already there let them count because they were already there. Then ask how many cars were added and let them count. Then you say okay, two were already here right? And let them respond once they respond go on and five more we're added right? Be patient with them and let them respond. So _______how many do we have all together let's count and you guys can count them together or mommy
you can let them count them by themselves. It is highly recommended so that they can differentiate use different color cars. Also sometimes counting together is best at this age
You could also have your child do something like this. How many cars are there total. When you have 3 cars in each lane count all the cars in each lane or in all five lanes.
Let's do another one let's say the math problem is 6 + 3 and you're trying to find the answer. You can use popsicle sticks in specific colors one color would be used for six and another color will be used for three. Put 6 on one side and 3 on the other how many there are total. You can use the Popsicles to make a tower too but let's not forget they are adding, subtracting or doing some kind of math
You can use anything you have at home as a manipulative to do math and make it fun. Use dice, beads clothes pins blocks feathers beans coins etc.
Practice Holding The Pencil Correctly .
Get some white paper and let them make some curved lines, straight lines zig zag lines with a pencil or a marker
cutting them out and pasting them in a notebook.
Let them write their name both first and last each day
And paint each letter they can also use marker for this. When they finish they can design it as well.
They can do a tracing worksheet with all of the alphabets everyday give them practice at using the pencil.
Learning letter ,sounds and words be done by playing hopscotch. Indoors or out. Call out the name of the letter, sound or a word you want them to find or spell. And let them have to where it is or hop on the letters that spell the the very word they're looking for.
If you want to teach blending sounds or diphong this can be done.
By writing the blending sound on one balloon and the rest of them word another when your child puts them together they have to sound each part of the word out and when they bring it together sound the entire word out until it sounds like one word. This is a good way to practice blending sounds that is not boring and keeps the kids engaged. And eager to learn couples this activity with worksheets at least two or three each day.
