The curriculum for one -two year olds
At the age of one or two your child is on and exploratory journey. He or she's being exposed to things they've never seen before, things they've never heard before and a whole world of things of they've never known.
On this particular journey in their lives their five senses are becoming alive literally.
They're in the phase where they have to taste, touch, feel, see, and smell everything. And it's absolutely fine Because it's part of the learning process.
Through this process they learn to decipher what is what how to do things.
They begin to have knowledge and wisdom and some understanding of certain things as they go through the process of there five senses maturing .
They become aware of their feelings, they're surroundings the people in this new world or place called earth all around them. Not only are they meeting a whole different world. But they're also meeting different people in their journey.
It is awareness of sight sound, touch ,feelings etc. That helps in the building process of who your children are.
For younger children the five senses are a tool that God uses to shape and mold into who they are. And you have the privilege momma's to join them on their journey. With that said let's go ahead and jump into our curriculum
Objective Learning Shapes Colors numbers. Letter Sounds letter names and parts of the body
Shapes and Color recognition
The following activities just for color recognition only materials needed 5 inch balloons of assorted colors, tape and a bag
Tape one row of three to five balloons of the same color do the second row in a different color and the third row in another color. Have your baby to a balloon and say the color with you a couple of times. . Then let them touch one row telling you what color that row is.
When they say the color, let them take the balloons off the wall and bring them to you. But before they put it in the bag ask them what color it is again. Then let them put it in the bag.
When they go back to the wall. Repeat the process. Let them tell you what color it is and you can help them. Let them bring it to you and let them state the color again before putting it in the bag.
Here's another activity
for color recognition only
Materials needed Play-Doh assorted colors and big clear plastic cups the see-through kind. Taping cups down this highly. recommended
Take different colors of Play-Doh.
Roll them into balls put them into a plastic see-through cup.
Plop them into the cup so that they kind of bounce just a little LOL And ask your child to identify the color. To make it more fun an edible take white frosting scoop it into the cup add different colors of food coloring. Use one color per cup. The baby use a straw to mix and if all else fails fingers are fine. When mixing is finished. Call out the colors pointing to each one let the baby repeat after you. Don't forget to repeat several times Then pointing to a specific color again ask the baby what color it is.
Shape and color recognition
Materials needed a plastic soup container.
Assorted color block shapes
Clear plastic cup
Mommy: Sit the container in front of you. Pronounce the name of the shape and color several times then put it into the container. Repeat this process with each shape you have everday until you start to notice that your baby is repeating after you and he or she is recognizing the shapes and colors
When you notice they're repeating and he or she is beginning to recognize the shapes.
Then put the container in front of your baby.Call out the name and color of any random shape you choose. Then let your baby put the blocks in the container. When they finish give them a big round of applause.
If they should miss one say no and then repeat the name of the shape and the color and put it back into the block pile. Meanwhile call out the name of other shapes then go back to the one they missed and see if they remember what shape and color it is.
You can also take matching flash cards with shapes on them. Take one set of flashcards hold them in your hand and the other set place them on the table in front of the baby tape them down if necessary on to the table so that they won't move.
Show them your flash cards, pronouncing the name of the shape and it's color.
Have them hold the clear plastic cup way up in the air, I need me show them how. Then let them fly it around like an airplane and land on the shape that you called out.
If they're not feeling up playing to airplane.
Letting them touch the matching card with their hand is fine. Make a game out of it. Example Johnny is at a square if you find the child on responsive. Try this. Johnny if it's a square tap two times. Mommy you took two times to show Johnny how to do it.
Letter sound recognition
Tip:
If you want your child to read faster teach them the sounds first. There are several ways this can be done.
Let them hear you say the letter sounds and vowel and have them repeat after you.
Sing songs about alphabet and vowel sounds. On YouTube or videos
Play letter sound hopscotch
Draw the hopscotch board either outside or inside as you say the alphabet sound let your baby walk to, run or jump to where or on the letter that makes that sound. You could also let your baby roll or place a ball to the appropriate letter
Once you guys have practice the letter and sounds for a while Get creative using bath time foam shapes.
Materials needed bath time foam shapes, plastic bucket, shovel or a spoon and a little pale or bag.
As you repeat each sound let your baby try to scoop the appropriate letter to the shovel or into the bag.
Letter sound basketball
Materials needed paper bags or paper trash cans and the toy of some sort
Say four or five letter sounds
Write them on a big long sheet of paper and put it on the floor.
Place a paper bag or a paper trash can above each letter. If your baby can recognize the letter sound when he or she recognizes the letter sound. Find an object meaning a ball, balloon or toy.
Ask them what sound did you make and let them put the item into the bag above the appropriate letter.
When they get it right don't forget to applaud them.
If they get it wrong. Calmly say no. Try another one another one.
Counting
Play a clapping game. Have someone call out the number one and put one finger up. And let the baby try to clap one time then go on to number two and repeat the same process until you get to number 10. It is helpful to have someone sitting with the baby at this time either clapping with them or helping them. Body movements can be used in this game as well to keep the baby's interest.
Example someone shouts out one and clap one time then two clapping two times three clapping three times ect. You can do several different kind of versions of this game. Clap three times stop three times snap three times.
And let your baby try to do it. It's fun
Letter name recognition create a sensory box or you can buy sensory box
Choose two letters that you want your babies to learn put them in the sensory box along with toys that begin with that letter. Bury the in the bottom of the sensory box along with the letters. As your toddler takes the toys out you excitedly say the name of the toy along with the baby. Sing the letter name as well. If he or she hasn't found it already. If they have make sure you shout out the letters.
When you guys finish group the toys into groups of two and put its letter in front of it.
Ask the baby what letter and let the baby respond. Help them along. Remember this still a toddler and he may not remember everything and that's okay they're learning.
You can also do a scavenger hunt hide things that begin with the letters you're teaching around the house.
Remember they have to be placed in easy places where they can find them.
If need be do one letter at a time. Do a second round with the second letter.
Let them run and have a ball. See how many they find. Then you can count them if you like.
Start counting very softly the closer you get to 10 and get louder when you get to 10 shout out as loud as you can.
Sing the ants go marching one by one including the movement.
Go to the grocery store and you and your baby count fruit while bagging it to put in your basket.
